Over a thousand years of history
Historical records tell us that the abbey began as a center of prayer and work for monks, who cultivated the land and offered shelter to wayfarers. Over the centuries, it saw both prosperity and decline, especially during the Napoleonic suppressions, which marked the end of monastic life. In the 19th century, it passed into private hands and, after careful restoration in recent decades, it has found new vitality.

The abbey is a fine example of Abruzzo’s Romanesque architecture: stone walls, harmonious proportions, and a simple yet spiritual church. The compact complex still dominates the rural landscape of the Vomano Valley. Walking through its courtyards and cloisters, one can feel the quiet charm of a distant past.
From monastery to winery
In recent years, Propezzano Abbey has embraced a new calling: wine production. Its historic cellars have been restored, now housing barrels of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Pecorino, and Passerina. Visitors can join guided tours with tastings, paired with traditional local delicacies.
